DU Gears Up for First 4-Year Batch Under NEP 2020: Key Challenges & Preparations

The University of Delhi (DU) is preparing to welcome its first four-year undergraduate program (FYUP) batch under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. As the transition unfolds, the university faces several challenges, including maintaining a balanced student-teacher ratio, upgrading infrastructure, and restructuring the academic timetable to accommodate the extended course duration.
Student-Teacher Ratio & Faculty Requirements
With the implementation of the FYUP, DU anticipates a significant increase in student enrollment. Ensuring a healthy student-teacher ratio remains a primary concern, as an increase in batch strength demands additional faculty recruitment. Many departments are expected to hire more teachers to maintain the quality of education and prevent workload imbalances among existing faculty members.
Infrastructure Expansion & Classroom Capacity
DU’s colleges and departments are also focusing on infrastructure upgrades to accommodate the four-year structure. This includes expanding classroom spaces, upgrading laboratory facilities, and ensuring sufficient library and research resources. Given the additional academic year, colleges will need to manage hostel capacity, study spaces, and other essential amenities to meet student needs effectively.
Academic Timetable & Curriculum Adjustments
The restructuring of the academic timetable is another crucial aspect of implementing NEP 2020. The new framework introduces interdisciplinary courses, research-based learning, and flexible exit options. DU is working on designing an academic schedule that balances core subjects, skill-based courses, and extracurricular activities while ensuring students get enough time for internships, projects, and research work.
